New Zealand Frigate's Makes First Jakarta Port Call Since 2017

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The visit of the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) frigate HMNZS Te Kaha to Jakarta is viewed as an opportunity to strengthen defense cooperation between Indonesia and New Zealand.

“We are committed to regional maritime security and stability in the Indo-Pacific. This visit provides a valuable chance to continue dialogue and cooperation with the Indonesian Navy,” said RNZN Maritime Component Commander Commodore Shane Ardnell in Jakarta on Monday.

According to a statement from the New Zealand Embassy in Jakarta, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday, this is HMNZS Te Kaha’s first friendship visit to Jakarta since 2017.

Ardnell explained that the crew used the two-day stop, which began on Sunday, to meet with top Indonesian Navy officials, including the Commander of the Indonesian Fleet. Commander Fiona Jameson, who leads HMNZS Te Kaha, was among those representing the RNZN.

While in Jakarta, the ship’s crew engaged in cooperative activities with their Indonesian counterparts. These included friendly sporting events and professional exchange briefings.

The visit also featured a diplomatic reception hosted by Commodore Ardnell and New Zealand Ambassador to Indonesia Phillip Taula.

New Zealand considers the visit an opportunity to reaffirm its long-term commitment to maritime cooperation and the principle of freedom of navigation in the Indo-Pacific.

This port call follows the recent participation of New Zealand Navy Chief of Staff Rear Admiral Garin Golding at the International Maritime Security Symposium in Bali earlier this year.

It also serves as a follow-up to New Zealand’s ongoing support for the UK Carrier Strike Group operating in the Indo-Pacific. After concluding its agenda in Jakarta, HMNZS Te Kaha is scheduled to sail to Australia to take part in the joint exercise "Talisman Sabre."
