TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's Minister of Agriculture, Amran Sulaiman, has just stated that the rice planting season in 2026 in the affected areas of Sumatra's floods will not experience setbacks. "I don't think so because not all of it is damaged," said Amran at the Coordinating Ministry for Food Affairs office, Monday, December 29, 2025.
Amran Sulaiman stated that a team from the Ministry of Agriculture has been deployed to the fields to assess the damage to the rice fields. Amran said that in total, there are around 80,000 hectares of rice fields affected by the Sumatra floods. Meanwhile, 11,000 hectares of rice fields have suffered severe damage or are "puso" and will be rebuilt.
Meanwhile, the report from the Aceh Agriculture and Plantation Office stated that the floods in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra have impacted 89,582 hectares of rice fields.
The Head of the Aceh Agriculture and Plantation Office, Cut Huzaimah, said that the office is working to rehabilitate severely damaged fields and providing seed assistance to farmers whose fields can still be replanted.
Cut Huzaimah said that the damage data has been submitted to the Ministry of Agriculture. He stated that the Ministry of Agriculture's Inspector General has received the report and stated that this issue will be a serious concern for the ministry. For fields that can still be planted, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to provide seed assistance.
As for fields that can no longer be planted due to being covered in mud, the Aceh Provincial Government will strive to rehabilitate the flood-affected rice fields. "For fields that cannot be planted anymore, we are currently striving for the rehabilitation of the flood-affected rice fields. There is a program there, which also includes the rice fields that were affected by the previous tsunami," he said in an official statement on the Aceh Provincial Government's website, December 22, 2025.
Cut Huzaimah mentioned that the rehabilitation process is expected to take quite a long time. The duration depends on the extent of the disaster's impact.
"If we look at this, it's already similar to starting a new paddy field because it's all flat. This rehabilitation process will take six months," said Cut Huzaimah.
