TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported a tectonic earthquake in the Sulawesi Sea, off the Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, at 08:54 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
The agency's updated analysis indicates that the earthquake registered at a magnitude of 5.0. The epicenter was located at coordinates 5.59 N and 125.28 E, positioned at sea roughly 220 kilometers northwest of Karatung Island, North Sulawesi, at a depth of 54 kilometers.
"Considering the epicenter and hypocenter, this was a shallow earthquake triggered by subduction plate activity," BMKG's Earthquake and Tsunami Director, Daryono, said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Source mechanism analysis indicates that the earthquake exhibited an oblique thrust movement," he added.
Based on estimated shaking intensity maps, the tremors were felt at MMI III in the Marore Islands, Sangihe Islands, and Miangas in the Talaud Islands, as well as MMI II - III in Kendahe, Sangihe Islands.
So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the tremor. Modeling results also indicate that the earthquake does not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
This earthquake is part of a series of aftershocks following the massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck Mindanao, Philippines, on June 8, 2026, at 06:37 a.m. WIB. As of 09:10 a.m. WIB on June 10, 2026, BMKG monitoring had recorded 218 aftershocks, with the largest registering at magnitude 6.7.
