TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has referred to BRICS—which has evolved as a strong and principled force—as an opportunity to shape a more balanced and just international order.
Existing international organizations need to be reformed to reflect the constantly changing global reality and consider the aspirations of developing countries, Anwar said in a statement as reported by Xinhua and cited by Antara on Monday, July 7, 2025.
"I also call for a major overhaul of global institutions such as the United Nations, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and the World Trade Organization, to better reflect current realities and the needs of developing countries, rather than remaining trapped in outdated post-World War II structures," he said.
Anwar, who attended the 17th BRICS Summit held in Brazil, added that the group must strengthen economic cooperation both among its member countries and with other regional groups such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
"BRICS and ASEAN members must also continue to strengthen strategic cooperation, including enhancing cross-regional trade and investment for the mutual benefit of developing nations," Anwar said.
An important moment in the BRICS summit is the official inclusion of Indonesia as its full member. Additionally, BRICS also recognized several countries as partners, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
