Jakarta to Restore 7,000 Ha of Land in Puncak to Combat Floods

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Minister of Environment, Hanif Faisol, said that he met with Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung and West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi to discuss solutions for Jakarta's recurring floods. They agreed on mitigation steps, including rehabilitating a 7,000-hectare area in the upstream Ciliwung River basin.

"We talked with both governors and agreed that there should be rehabilitation in the Puncak area covering 7,000 hectares," Hanif told Tempo at his official residence on Galuh Street, Jakarta, on Sunday night, July 6, 2025.

Hanif also revealed that the rehabilitation costs for the Ciliwung River basin, located in Bogor Regency, West Java, would be covered by the Jakarta Regional Budget (APBD). This funding is considered a form of assistance to the capital's buffer zone and is deemed more effective than solely focusing on downstream solutions. "It's better to address the source of the problem at the upstream, where it originates," he explained.

Previously, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung chose to prioritize the dredging of rivers on the outskirts of Jakarta to tackle the floods. He conveyed this during an inspection of the Cakung River dredging in East Jakarta.

Pramono stressed the importance of maintaining irrigation channels on Jakarta's outskirts, such as the Cakung River, as these are contributors to the city's flooding. "Basically, I have decided that the dredging on the outskirts of Jakarta should be carried out immediately, as this is our top priority," Pramono said on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Meanwhile, Jakarta was hit by floods again due to high-intensity rainfall over the past weekend, which continued into Monday. According to Pramono, this particular flood was the first "concurrent flood" he faced during his leadership in Jakarta.

"First, [it is due to] the flood from upstream, secondly [it is due to] the rainfall in Jakarta, and thirdly, it coincides with tidal flooding or rising sea levels," he elaborated.

The Jakarta Government, specifically the Jakarta Water Resources Agency (SDA), also maximized the use of pumps to alleviate the floods. "Because of the recent incident, all our pumps ran at 100% capacity," said the Head of Jakarta SDA, Ika Agustin, on Monday.
