Israel Frees Settler Accused of Killing Oscar-Winning Palestinian Film Consultant

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Israeli court on Tuesday ordered the release of Yinon Levi, an illegal settler accused of killing Awdah Hathaleen, a Palestinian activist in the West Bank region of Palestine.

Awdah Mohammad Khalil al-Hathaleen, 31, who was also a consultant for the Oscar-winning documentary No Other Land, was shot dead by an illegal Israeli settler in the Palestinian village of Umm al-Kheir on Monday night.

A video footage shared by the Israeli human rights group B'Tselem showed Yinon Levi firing shots at Hathaleen.

According to the Haaretz newspaper, as reported by Anadolu, the Magistrate's Court in Jerusalem released Levi and placed him under house arrest.

The newspaper wrote, "The police attributed to him the crimes of manslaughter and shooting with a firearm."

The European Union and the United States had previously imposed sanctions on Levi for his violence against Palestinians.

No Other Land, which documents the struggle of Palestinians against Israel's demolition and eviction policies in Masafer Yatta in the West Bank, won the Oscar this year for Best Documentary 2024.

In a separate incident, Israeli soldiers raided the village of Umm al-Kheir and arrested two foreign activists, according to eyewitnesses speaking to Anadolu.

The soldiers declared the village a closed military zone to prevent media coverage following the murder on Monday, they added.

Since the start of the Israeli genocide war in Gaza in October 2023, at least 1,009 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 others injured in the West Bank by Israeli forces and illegal settlers, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.

In a landmark ruling last July, the International Court declared Israel's occupation of Palestinian territory illegal and called for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Awdah Hathaleen was standing near the fence in the Umm al-Kheir community center when she was shot in the chest by an Israeli settler on Monday, July 28, 2025. Awdah fell to the ground as people rushed to her aid. An ambulance emerged from the nearby Carmel illegal settlement and took her away.

Awdah died after being shot in the upper body amidst clashes in the Umm Al-Khair village, where a group of Palestinians faced off against settlers. Israeli media identified the shooter as Yinon Levi, a right-wing extremist and Israeli settler from the Carmel settlement.

The Biden administration had previously sanctioned Levi, but this action was reversed during Donald Trump's presidency. However, Levi remained blacklisted by Canada, the UK, and the European Union.

Eyewitnesses reported that Levi fired shots at Palestinian civilians with a pistol. Emergency responders from the Palestinian Red Crescent and Magen David Adom from Israel were dispatched. Hathaleen was taken to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, but she succumbed to her injuries a few hours later. Additionally, two other Palestinians were injured in the incident.

Following the shooting, Israeli police stated that the Israeli citizen involved had been arrested and that the matter was under investigation. However, some reports stated that Levi was only being interrogated and had not been charged. The police also detained four Palestinians and two foreign tourists at the scene.
