TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Direct negotiations between Iran and the United States ended without an agreement after nearly 21 hours of talks in Islamabad from Saturday into early Sunday, April 12.
According to Anadolu Agency, citing Tasnim News Agency, the negotiations collapsed due to what Tehran described as "excessive demands" from Washington.
Tasnim reported that "the American spirit of excessive demands" prevented both sides from reaching a common framework, despite repeated initiatives and proposals from the Iranian delegation to move the talks forward. The report identified Washington’s position as the main obstacle to an agreement.
Pakistan had attempted to facilitate further rounds of negotiations and an exchange of draft agreements since Sunday morning, but those efforts failed to produce results. No timeline or venue has been set for the next round of talks.
Sharp Differences on Hormuz and Nuclear Issues
According to Fars News Agency, Tehran rejected U.S. demands related to the Strait of Hormuz, its peaceful nuclear program, and the transfer of nuclear materials its territory. The agency said Washingtonwas seeking through negotiations “what it failed to achieve in war.”
The report also said the U.S. delegation appeared to be seeking grounds to exit the negotiations and was unwilling to scale back its demands despite the impasse. Iran, meanwhile, denied U.S. claims that two of its vessels had crossed the Strait of Hormuz.

Differing Claims from Both Sides
According to Al Jazeera, U.S. Vice President J. D. Vance left Islamabad after the talks concluded without results, saying he had presented the “last and best offer” during the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said both sides had reached agreement on several points, adding that it was reasonable no comprehensive deal could be finalized in a single day of talks.
The negotiations in Islamabad took place amid a two-week ceasefire announced earlier by the United States. However, tensions remain high in the region. Israel is reported to have continued strikes in southern Lebanon, including in the city of Tefahta, where at least 13 people were killed.
