TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government and the European Union (EU) officially introduced the Visa Cascade policy for Indonesian citizens on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
Under this new arrangement, Indonesians who have traveled to EU countries two or more times are now eligible to apply for a multi-entry Schengen visa.
Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto explained that the policy is a result of the meeting between President Prabowo Subianto and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels on July 13, 2025.
“Indonesian citizens who have held at least one Schengen visa in the past three years are now eligible for a multiple-entry visa valid for up to five years.
Indonesia already provides visa on arrival for citizens of 27 EU countries,” Airlangga said at his office.
Airlangga expressed hope that the Visa Cascade would bring direct benefits to Indonesia’s economy and business sector.
According to him, Indonesian entrepreneurs will now find it easier to travel to Europe.
“Our business community now has more flexibility, allowing them to attend trade fairs, business forums, and investment meetings across the EU with greater ease,” he added.
He also emphasized that this policy could enhance Indonesia's global footprint in European markets and open up broader export opportunities.
“I hope this Visa Cascade policy will boost Indonesia’s international presence and unlock wider export access for Indonesian goods in Europe—offering a greater variety of products at more competitive prices for European consumers,” he said.
European Union Ambassador to Indonesia Denis Chaibi also shared details of the policy. He noted that Indonesian citizens with a prior Schengen visa can now apply for a Cascade visa with a five-year validity, without needing to reapply each time.
However, first-time visitors from Indonesia must still follow the existing visa procedures. They will become eligible for the Cascade visa on subsequent visits.
“Now, after one valid visa, you go to the next destination and receive a multiple-entry visa valid for five years,” said Chaibi.
