TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian U-23 national team only managed to draw without scoring against Malaysia in the last Group A stage of the AFF U-23 Cup 2025, on Monday night, July 21, 2025. Despite dominating ball possession by more than 60 percent, Kadek Arel and his teammates were unable to score in the tight match held at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta.
Despite failing to win, the coach of the Indonesian U-23 national team, Gerald Vanenburg, appreciated his players for giving 100 percent effort. "Tonight's match was quite challenging for us," said Gerald to reporters after the match.
Gerald said that the young Malaysian national team played with a tight and cohesive defense. They played defensively well. "We were lucky not to concede a goal," he said.
The 61-year-old coach praised his team's defensive line. According to him, Kadek and his teammates in the back line defended very solidly, making it difficult for the opponents to create opportunities and ultimately unable to score. "The backline played extraordinarily, and the entire team gave their best," he said.
Gerald believed that his team successfully showcased a 100 percent good performance. However, the team needs to play with a gameplay pattern that can be executed when there's Arkhan Fikri moving freely, able to penetrate the opponent's lines. However, when facing Malaysia, Arema FC's player couldn't play due to illness.
The lineup of the Indonesian U-23 national team changed when facing Malaysia in the last group match. Gerald did not field goalkeeper Muhammad Ardiansyah; his position was replaced by Cahya Supriadi. Arkhan Fikri was also not fielded. Viktor Dethan, who was previously a starter against the Philippines in the second match, was fielded as a right-winger from the beginning.
With this draw, the Indonesian U-23 national team emerged as the champion of Group A AFF U-23 Cup 2025, accumulating seven points. Meanwhile, Malaysia was confirmed to be eliminated as they were in third place with three points.
