Indonesia, US Continue Talks on Reciprocal Tariffs

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for the Economy Airlangga Hartarto revealed the response from Jamieson Greer, the representative of the United States trade office to Indonesia's negotiation document on Donald Trump's reciprocal tariffs. "Ambassador Greer appreciates Indonesia's proposal and considers it a good basis for the United States' consideration," said Airlangga Hartarto during a virtual press conference from Paris on Wednesday night, June 4, 2025.

Airlangga said he met with Greer at the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 2025 ministerial-level meeting in Paris, France. Airlangga stated that the negotiation of U.S. tariffs became one of the agenda items.

He said that Indonesia will soon conduct the second round of negotiations on U.S. trade tariffs. The government will send an Indonesian delegation team next week as negotiators. "The Indonesian delegation will send a team to Washington for the next round of negotiations," said Airlangga.

He stated that the Indonesian government prioritizes social interests and takes concrete actions. "Indonesia is estimated to be one of the 18 countries whose documents are more advanced in the settlement of these negotiations," Airlangga said. He hopes the document and negotiations will produce optimal results for Indonesia's trade in the global market, including the United States.

Secretary of the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy Susiwijono Moegiarso said that negotiations on reciprocal tariffs had begun with virtual technical teams from Indonesia and the United States. The goal is to complete the negotiations within 60 or 90 days at the latest.

The technical teams from both countries have decided that the negotiations will be completed within 60 days, starting from the decision of U.S. President Donald Trump to postpone reciprocal tariffs on April 9, 2025. Susiwijono continues to pursue the completion of the negotiations with the team. "Hopefully, the target will still be completed in 60 days. At the latest, it will be completed by the 90-day deadline from the April 9 postponement, which is July 8, 2025," he said when met at his office on Jalan Lapangan Banteng, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025.

According to Susiwijono, the USTR team is open to discussing the matter with Indonesia. He hopes that the progress currently occurring is better than in other countries.

Amid the negotiation efforts, the Indonesian government will also reform domestic policies. A deregulation task force will soon be formed to review changes in policies. Susiwijono said that the Coordinating Ministry for the Economy has completed the framework for forming the task force.

In addition to the Deregulation Task Force, the government will also form two other task forces, the task force for layoffs and the negotiation task force. The framework for the task forces has been submitted to the Ministry of the State Secretariat for President Prabowo Subianto's signature.

The formation of the task forces, according to Susiwijono, is targeted to be completed this week. "All three task forces have been completed: the Layoff Task Force, the Indonesia-U.S. Negotiation Task Force, and the Deregulation Task Force," he said.
