TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister Arrmanatha Nasir has called for no veto to be applied against Palestine’s bid for full membership in the United Nations, aiming to strengthen its position in the international community.
Speaking at the ministerial session of the UN High-Level Conference on the Peaceful Settlement of the Issue of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday (local time), Arrmanatha emphasized the need to maintain momentum toward a two-state solution.
“This includes not vetoing the full membership of the State of Palestine in the UN,” said Arrmanatha, as quoted by UN Web TV and reported by Antara on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.
Veto power at the UN Security Council is held by five permanent members: the United States, China, the United Kingdom, France, and Russia.
During the conference, Indonesia and Italy co-chaired Working Group 2, which focused on security aspects concerning both countries and the broader region.
Arrmanatha stressed that any effort to support Palestine must aim to strengthen the authority of the Palestinian Authority, including within a transitional government in Gaza, and ensure security in Palestinian territories.
In addition to delivering the working group report alongside Italy, the Indonesian deputy foreign minister also praised France’s “bold decision” to soon recognize Palestine.
He called it a significant and concrete step, especially in the face of failed efforts to curb violations of international and humanitarian law in Israel’s attacks on Palestine.
“Indonesia urges other countries and leaders who have not yet recognized Palestine to seize this momentum and follow France’s lead in advancing the two-state solution,” he said.
The high-level conference was jointly chaired by France and Saudi Arabia and focused on restarting peace talks and pushing forward the two-state solution as a resolution to the Israel-Palestine conflict.
Besides the working group led by Indonesia and Italy, other sessions discussed economic sustainability in Palestinian territories, as well as humanitarian action and post-conflict reconstruction.
