TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Religious Affairs has scheduled an isbat meeting or moonsighting confirmation hearing for Tuesday, May 27, 2025, to determine the start of Dhul Hijjah 1446 Hijri. The outcome of this session will officially set the date for this year's Eid al-Adha.
"The isbat session will be held at the Ministry of Religious Affairs office on Jalan MH Thamrin, Jakarta, starting at 4:00 PM WIB (Western Indonesia Time)," said Arsad Hidayat, Director of Islamic Religious Affairs and Sharia Development, in his statement on Thursday, May 23.
Before the isbat session, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will hold a seminar, which will focus on the position of the new crescent moon and will feature astronomy experts and specialists in Islamic astronomy from various Islamic groups. Arsad mentioned that the isbat session itself will be a private meeting.
During the isbat session, the Ministry of Religious Affairs will receive reports on crescent moon sightings from 114 different locations across Indonesia. The results of these sightings, along with data on the moon's position, will then be discussed in the isbat session.
"The Minister of Religious Affairs will listen to feedback from the Chair of the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) and the meeting participants before making the official decision on when Dhul Hijjah 1446 H begins," Arsad stated.
He also mentioned several groups and individuals who will attend the isbat session. These include representatives from friendly foreign embassies, the Chair of Commission VIII of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), the Supreme Court, MUI, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG), and the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Also present will be representatives from the Bosscha Observatory at ITB, the Jakarta Planetarium, members of the Ministry of Religious Affairs' Hisab Rukyat team (moon calculation and sighting team), leaders of major Islamic organizations, and Islamic boarding schools.
Arsad explained that the new crescent moon's position at sunset across all of Indonesia will be above the horizon. Specifically, its height will be between 0 degrees 44.15 minutes and 3 degrees 12.29 minutes. Meanwhile, the angle of elongation (the apparent distance between the moon and the sun) will range from 5 degrees 50.64 minutes to 7 degrees 6.27 minutes.
"These conditions meet the standards set by the Ministers of Religious Affairs of Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore (MABIMS), which serve as the main guide for determining the start of Islamic months in Southeast Asia," Arsad said.
