TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia and the United States have agreed to finalize negotiations regarding the 32 percent reciprocal tariffs imposed by the U.S. on Indonesian products within the next 60 days. Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Airlangga Hartarto announced this agreement following a progress report from the Indonesian delegation in Washington, D.C.

"Indonesia and the United States have reached an agreement to conclude this negotiation within a 60-day period," Airlangga said during a virtual press conference held on Friday morning, April 18, 2025.

Airlangga, leading the delegation, presented the advancements made in the negotiations. He was accompanied by two key team members: Deputy Minister of Finance Thomas Djiwandono and Deputy Chair of the National Economic Council (DEN) Mari Elka Pangestu. According to him, the governments of both countries have collaboratively formulated and agreed upon the framework for a cooperative agreement.

This agreed framework includes several pivotal partnership agreements. "The scope of this framework agreement includes a trade and investment partnership, collaborations concerning essential minerals, and also matters related to the resilience and reliability of high-resilience entry corridor chains," Airlangga elaborated.

The outcomes of the recent meetings will be followed by subsequent rounds of discussions, potentially one, two, or three sessions. The delegation team expresses optimism that within this 60-day timeframe, the established framework can be translated into a formal agreement that will receive final approval from both Indonesia and the United States.

Airlangga noted that the delegation had recently concluded meetings with U.S. Trade Representative Howard William Lutnick and trade representative for the United States Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer. Furthermore, Foreign Minister Sugiono has also engaged in discussions with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

According to him, throughout their engagements in the United States, the Indonesian team actively met with pertinent officials within the U.S. administration. Their discussions centered on various follow-up actions to the negotiation letters previously conveyed by the Indonesian government to the government of the United States.

As previously reported, on April 2, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the implementation of reciprocal tariffs on imports from several countries entering the United States, with Indonesia facing a 32 percent tariff. Initially slated to take effect on April 9, 2025, the implementation of these reciprocal tariffs was subsequently postponed by President Trump for a period of 90 days to facilitate negotiation efforts by the affected nations.
