TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Prambanan Temple as a symbol of the cultural ties between Indonesia and India, as the two countries agreed to collaborate on the restoration of the temple complex.

"Tomorrow, I will inaugurate, together with President Prabowo, the conservation of Prambanan Temple in Yogyakarta," Modi said in a joint statement with Prabowo on Tuesday, July 7.

"This temple is more than a thousand years old and is a symbol of our shared culture, the cultural ties between Indonesia and India," he added.

He noted that the restoration project will be carried out through cooperation between the Indonesian government and the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The agreement on restoration and conservation efforts was previously reaffirmed during President Prabowo Subianto's visit to India in 2025.

Besides cultural ties, Indonesia and India have also enjoyed a longstanding educational diplomacy, which was marked by the meeting between Indonesian educational figure Ki Hajar Dewantara and Indian philosopher Rabindranath Tagore in Yogyakarta in 1927.

To celebrate this, the two countries designated 2026-2027 as the Tagore-Dewantara Year to promote closer cultural and educational exchanges.

"A golden era is upon us. Our history is rooted in our shared culture. Our presence and mutual trust, and our future will also be marked by shared prosperity," said Narendra Modi.

Previously, Indonesian President Prabowo and the Indian PM held a meeting at the Merdeka Palace today and witnessed the signing and announcement of 16 cooperation documents and memorandums of understanding between Indonesia and India.

The 16 documents cover cooperation between government agencies and companies across various sectors, ranging from space exploration and defense to healthcare and agriculture, telecommunications, and education.

Indian Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to visit Yogyakarta on Wednesday. Part of his agenda will be visiting the Prambanan Temple complex.
