Heavy Rain in Beijing Causes 80,000 People to Be Evacuated, 30 Dead

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 30 people died due to heavy rain and flooding in Beijing as heavy rain poured down on the Chinese capital. The victims were in the northern mountainous district of Beijing. A total of 28 people died in Miyun and two in Yanqing, according to the official state news agency Xinhua, cited from Al Jazeera.

The heavy rain began over the weekend. The rainfall increased in the areas around the Chinese capital and in other provinces on Monday, July 28, 2025. Beijing recorded up to 543 mm (21.3 inches) of rainfall in the northern district.

Authorities in Beijing have relocated over 80,000 residents from the worst-hit flood areas. The disaster has damaged dozens of roads and cut off electricity to at least 136 villages, according to the national state broadcaster's report, CCTV.

Heavy rain in Beijing is predicted to continue into Tuesday morning, with rainfall of up to 300 mm expected in some regions.

Local authorities ordered the opening of the dam water in the Miyun district, rural Beijing, which was at its highest level at the time. Local residents were warned to stay away from the downstream river as the water level rose, and heavy rain is expected to occur again.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday night ordered search and rescue efforts to minimize casualties. Authorities instructed residents to stay indoors, close schools, suspend construction work, and halt outdoor tourism and other activities until the emergency warning is lifted.

The government has allocated 350 million yuan, equivalent to Rp 803 billion, for disaster relief in nine regions hit by heavy rain, according to the state broadcaster CCTV on Tuesday, cited from France 24. The nine regions include northern Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanxi, Shaanxi, Inner Mongolia, northeastern Jilin, eastern Shandong, and southern Guangdong.

In 2023, heavy rain killed over 80 people in northern and northeastern China, including at least 29 in Hebei. Floods have destroyed homes and crops.
