TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A severe heatwave hitting Europe since last week is estimated to have caused around 2,300 deaths, according to a study released on Wednesday.
Around 1,500 out of the approximately 2,300 heat-related deaths are linked to climate change, resulting in more severe heatwaves across the continent, according to research conducted by scientists at Imperial College London and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, as reported by Anadolu.
The study stated that climate change has doubled the number of heat-related deaths in early summer across Europe.
The researchers focused on a 10-day heatwave from June 23 to July 2, covering 12 cities in Europe, including London, Paris, Frankfurt, Budapest, Zagreb (Croatia), Athens, Rome, Milan, Sassari (Italy), Barcelona, Madrid, and Lisbon.
"The findings of this analysis and many others are extremely clear: heat extremes all across Europe are increasing rapidly due to human-induced climate change," the study said.
The research further emphasized that the temperature in these cities increased by up to four degrees Celsius.
The study warned that heatwave temperatures will rise, which could lead to more deaths.
The Copernicus Climate Change Service of the European Union also stated in its monthly climate bulletin on Wednesday that June 2025 was the third warmest June globally.
"June 2025 saw an exceptional heatwave impact large parts of western Europe, with much of the region experiencing very strong heat stress," said Samantha Burgess, the head of strategy for climate at the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
"This heatwave was made more intense by record sea surface temperatures in the western Mediterranean," she added.
Burgess warned that heatwaves are likely to become "more frequent, more intense," and impact more people across Europe.
