TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Greenpeace ship, Arctic Sunrise, will join more than 70 vessels and thousands of activists in the Global Sumud Flotilla contingent to oppose the blockade of aid to Gaza by Israel. In this convoy, the Arctic Sunrise will provide technical and operational maritime support to ensure the safe passage of other ships across the Mediterranean Sea, before embarking on the final voyage of 200 nautical miles to the land of Gaza.

The Global Sumud Flotilla is scheduled to depart from Barcelona, Spain, today, April 12, 2026. The armada will make stops in Syracuse, Italy, and Lerapetra, Greece, before continuing its journey to Gaza. In this April 2026 mission, representatives from Greenpeace Indonesia will sail alongside activists from around 100 countries, bringing symbolic aid such as medicine, food, and clean water.

The Head of Greenpeace Indonesia, Leonard Simanjuntak, stated that Greenpeace's involvement in this convoy is a commitment to peace and justice across sectors. "The genocide in Gaza and the illegal wars in Iran and Lebanon only bring suffering to the people," Leonard said in a written statement on Thursday, April 9, 2026.

He explained that the carbon emissions from air and ground attacks further exacerbate the climate conditions. "Greenpeace's participation in the Global Sumud Flotilla convoy this time is a real commitment by us to maintain the peace needed to achieve comprehensive justice, both in terms of the environment, social, and economic aspects for all human beings without exception," he added.

The participation of representatives from Indonesia in the Global Sumud Flotilla, according to Leonard, also demonstrates the strong solidarity of the Indonesian people with Palestine. He stated that "This should serve as a strong reprimand for the Indonesian government to reconsider its involvement in the Board of Peace and take a firm stance on the wars in Iran and Lebanon."

Prior to this, in September 2025, the Global Sumud Flotilla conducted a voyage with 42 ships and 462 individuals. The armada was intercepted by the Israeli army about 70 nautical miles from the Gulf of Gaza, with reports of communication disruptions and surveillance by drones.

The Arctic Sunrise has been part of the Greenpeace fleet since 1995 and has been used in various global campaigns, from Antarctica to the Arctic. This 50.5-meter-long ship can accommodate up to 30 people and is designed to sail in icy waters at a maximum speed of 13 knots.
