TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has apologized for the provincial government's inability to fully tackle the recent floods. He conveyed this message to the public after widespread flooding reoccurred in various parts of the capital city, starting Sunday, July 6, and lasting until Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
As of 6 a.m. today, floods are still inundating 46 neighborhood units (RT) across Jakarta. "In particular, I want to apologize to the affected citizens," Pramono said during his inspection of the Ciliwung River Inspection Dike in Pancoran, South Jakarta, on Tuesday.
He also urged the city officials to apologize to the community for the floods, emphasizing that these events are not planned. According to the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician, floods are an "inevitability" in Jakarta. "There are things that, I'm sorry, cannot be fought against," Pramono admitted.
He cited several factors he considers unavoidable, such as Jakarta's position at the receiving end of water flowing from upstream rivers outside the city. Additionally, he mentioned that high sea tides contribute to the problem by preventing river water from flowing out.
Strategies for Minimizing Flood Impact
However, Pramono clarified that he does not wish to solely blame floods originating from outside the city. Instead, he expressed an intention to work around these persistent conditions. "We will strategize as best as we can, finding ways to minimize the impact on society," he affirmed.
Among the strategies he mentioned are optimizing river pumps to channel water to the sea and directing field officers to clear blockages in waterways like drainage channels and rivers. Pramono also highlighted the immediate need to execute the normalization of the Ciliwung River to accommodate larger water discharges.
Latest Flood Situation Report
