TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 26,000 residents in the western and central regions of Canada, including the communities of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, are forced to evacuate due to the widespread forest fires, according to local authorities and media reports as cited by Antara.
The Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre (CIFFC) reported that as of Sunday, there were 187 fire points across Canada, with 97 of them categorized as "uncontrolled."
Local media quoted statements from local officials, stating that more than 17,000 people had been evacuated from Manitoba, 8,000 from Saskatchewan, and another 1,300 from Alberta.
In a statement via the X platform, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that the federal government had activated the National Incident Response Group as the intensity of the fires increased, triggering mass evacuations and military assistance requests.
Carney mentioned that Canadian Armed Forces personnel had been deployed to assist in aerial evacuations in Manitoba, including in the Mathias Colomb Cree Nation community.
He also emphasized that the federal government would match any donations given to the Canadian Red Cross to aid the affected areas. They are also collaborating with provincial governments and indigenous community leaders to ensure the safety of residents.
"The scale and complexity of this aerial evacuation cannot be underestimated," Carney wrote on the X platform.
A number of evacuation centers have been opened in various areas in Manitoba, including in the city of Winkler, located about 20 kilometers from the US border.
Meanwhile, the forest fire smoke has been reported to drift into the central US and the Great Lakes region, prompting air quality alerts in several states such as the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes.
The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced on Saturday that they had sent a firefighting aircraft and 150 firefighters to assist in the firefighting efforts in Alberta.
