TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Five Israeli soldiers were killed and 14 others wounded in a bombing and subsequent attack by Palestinian fighters in northernGaza, the military confirmed on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
According to a statement cited by Anadolu and Ynet News, the Israeli military said: "Five soldiers from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion of the Kfir Brigade were killed in a battle in northern Gaza on Monday night, and 14 others were injured, including two severely."
Israeli Army Radio reported that the incident occurred on Monday night when a foot patrol from the Netzah Yehuda Battalion was moving through the city of Beit Hanoun.
"The infantry soldiers were hit by a bomb planted on the side of a road shortly after 10:00 PM (1900GMT) on Monday, during ground operations in Beit Hanoun. The soldiers were operating on foot, and were not inside a vehicle," the radio reported.
"While evacuating the injured from the explosion site, armed militants fired from an ambush towards the rescue forces, resulting in more casualties," it added.
"The evacuation became complicated and prolonged, and additional rescue forces were called," the military said.
The five soldiers killed were identified on Tuesday as Sergeant First Class (retired) Benyamin Asulin, 28, from Haifa; Staff Sergeant Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20, from Jerusalem; Staff Sergeant Meir Shimon Amar, 20, also from Jerusalem; Staff Sergeant Moshe Shmuel Noll, 21, from Beit Shemesh; and Sergeant Moshe Nissim Frech, 20, from Jerusalem.
Four of the soldiers served in the Netzah Yehuda Battalion (97th) of the Kfir Brigade. The name of the fifth soldier has not been released.
The blast marks the deadliest single incident for Israeli forces in Gaza since June, when eight soldiers were killed in Rafah by an anti-tank missile. It also follows a roadside bomb attack in Khan Younis two weeks ago that killed seven soldiers, including a technical officer.
Since Israel launched its ground offensive in Gaza at the end of 2023, at least 446 Israeli soldiers have died, according to military figures. The total number of Israeli troops killed since the start of what Palestinians and rights groups describe as a genocide stands at 888. Thirty-nine of those deaths have occurred since the last hostage release deal.
Israeli attacks have killed more than 57,500 Palestinians in Gaza since October 2023, the majority of whom were women and children.
