The Nanshan Community in Luojiang District, Quanzhou, China, is known as the Bali Village. In the 1960s, a group of Indonesian-Chinese descendants returned from Bali and settled there. "We started with farming, then worked in factories, and slowly built a life here," said Zhang Lianxing, 77, one of the pioneer residents of the Nanshan community in 1961, as quoted by Antara, Friday, July 25, 2025.
In recent years, especially during holidays, this community area has developed into a bustling center of activity. Many people come for the market stalls and Southeast Asian snacks.
Nanshan is just one of the Bali-themed places outside Indonesia. In other provinces in China and the Netherlands, there are also areas with a Bali-like atmosphere.
Hainan, China
In Wanning City, Hainan, there is a cultural tourist complex called Bali Village. Built through a collaboration between the local Chinese government and Ganesha Bali University of Education, the area features split gates, boma statues, and carvings of wayang characters, such as Dewi Sinta and Hanoman.
This area began developing in 2017. Lu Shaosheng, the director of Bali Village Tourism, said this project symbolizes the friendship between Indonesia and China. Visitors can also enjoy Balinese dance performances, sample Nusantara cuisine, and enroll in Indonesian-Balinese language courses.
Taman Kallenkote, Netherlands
In Taman Indonesia, Kallenkote, Netherlands, the Shanta Citta Bhuwana Temple has been built and was inaugurated on May 3, 2025. This temple has become a symbol of Balinese Hindu culture in Europe.
The construction was directly supported by the Bali government, starting with a customary ceremony of melaspas and ngenteg linggih. A Bali Festival was held for eight days to celebrate this historic moment. The event was enlivened with art performances, culinary delights, and cultural workshops. For the diaspora community, this temple serves as a way to maintain their connection to the values and traditions of their ancestors, even though they live far from Bali.
