Europe's Heatwave: A Traveler's Guide to Staying Safe and Cool

5 hours ago 5

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Several European countries, including Italy, Spain, France, and Portugal, have experienced a significant rise in temperatures over the past week. Notably, on July 1 and 2, 2025, the Eiffel Tower was closed due to an ongoing heatwave. Travelers planning a European vacation should be prepared to closely monitor local weather warnings.

Other European nations such as Turkey, Germany, and England have also been affected by extreme heatwaves. The German meteorological service reported a temperature increase in southern Germany, reaching up to 39 degrees Celsius, as cited by Travel and Leisure Asia. This heatwave has also ignited forest fires in Turkey, leading to the evacuation of over 50,000 people to safer areas.

Meanwhile, Spain experienced its hottest June temperatures on record, particularly in El Granado, Andalusia, where temperatures reached 46 degrees Celsius, and Mora, which saw 46.6 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature previously recorded in June was 45.2 degrees Celsius in Seville, in 1965.

Italy's Ministry of Health has placed 21 out of 27 cities, including Rome and Milan, under a red alert due to the extremely hot weather. England has also issued heat health warnings for Yorkshire and Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London, and the southern regions of England.

Here are some tips to consider if you are planning a trip to Europe in the near future:

1. Choose Cooler Destinations

If traveling to Europe, try to select regions with naturally cooler climates. Avoiding countries known for hotter weather, such as Italy and Spain, can help ensure a more comfortable and safe vacation.

2. Prioritize Night Travel

Traveling at night when exploring European areas is advisable to avoid extreme daytime temperatures. Prepare essential items for use during your journey and upon arrival at your destination. Ensure an adequate supply of fluids to prevent dehydration, or bring fresh fruits to help replenish electrolytes.

3. Dress Appropriately

Avoid wearing thick, heat-trapping clothing. Instead, opt for garments made from breathable, sweat-absorbing materials like linen or cotton.

4. Limit Daytime Activities

When visiting cities experiencing heatwaves, try to avoid activities during the hottest hours of the day. If you must go out, steer clear of peak heat between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.

5. Avoid Traveling for Vulnerable Groups

During heatwaves, vulnerable groups such as infants, pregnant women, young children, and individuals aged 65 and older are advised to exercise extra caution when traveling to places experiencing extreme heat.

6. Recognize Signs of Heat Exhaustion

Signs of heat exhaustion may include excessive sweating, cold or clammy skin, a rapid or weak pulse, and fainting. Heatstroke, a more severe condition, may involve an extremely high body temperature, hot skin, confusion, and fainting. If experiencing such symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical help immediately.
