Erick Thohir Offers Prabowo Subianto Position on PSSI Honorary Council

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Chairperson Erick Thohir has offered President Prabowo Subianto a seat on the PSSI Honorary Council. Erick said Prabowo accepted the offer, which was made during a meeting at the Presidential Palace in Central Jakarta on June 4.

The offer was made during the 2025 PSSI Ordinary Congress, which addressed several matters, including the ratification of the 2025 statute. The congress was attended by provincial football association (Asprov) delegates from various leagues.

During the congress, Erick said he also aimed to consolidate efforts to improve football development in the regions. "That's why today's congress is important. We want to rebuild the foundations of Indonesian football through new initiatives, especially strengthening the role of the Asprov in a more substantial way. But this has to move in step with the government," he said during his opening speech.

Erick emphasized the need for consolidation to focus on ensuring that grassroots football continues to grow in each region. "We are committed to supporting the Asprov. This isn't about politics. It's about the future of Indonesian football," he said.

He added that children in regional areas who play football must have the same opportunities as those in other parts of the country. He also called for greater balance among clubs at every level, from Liga 1 to Liga 4. "But what about the hundreds of local clubs in the regions? That's something we need to fix too," he said.

Erick urged both the PSSI central leadership and the Asprov to work hand in hand to build Indonesian football, along with club owners. "If we win tomorrow and make the playoffs, it could be an emotional moment. But it shouldn't make us complacent. That's when we need to rise even higher," he said.

This year's PSSI Congress was attended by 87 representatives: 34 from Asprov, 18 clubs from Liga 1 2024-2025, 16 clubs from Liga 2, 16 from Liga 3, and three football associations.

The congress began with confirmation that it complied with PSSI statutes, followed by the adoption of procedural rules, approval of the 2025 agenda, and appointment of vote counters and record inspectors. The session also included approval of the minutes, presentation of the 2024–2025 activity report, and financial reporting.

The congress continued with discussions on accepting new members, dismissals, name and domicile changes, and concluded with the ratification of the 2025 edition of the PSSI Statutes.
