Elon Musk Slams Trump's Spending Bill as 'Disgusting Abomination'

1 day ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -  Elon Musk issued a scathing condemnation of the spending bill proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday, June 4, 2025, calling it a "disgusting abomination." His comments mark a sharp escalation in tensions between the tech billionaire and the president following Musk’s departure from his government post.

Musk resigned from his official role last week, having previously been lauded by Trump for leading efforts to reduce federal spending. But the relationship between the two soured quickly after his exit.

“This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination,” Musk wrote on X, as quoted by Al Arabiya.

In what is his harshest criticism yet of Trump’s fiscal agenda, Musk added, “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong.”

This is not Musk’s first critique of the bill, which is projected to raise the U.S. deficit by $3 trillion over the next decade, even as it includes major cuts to health and food assistance programs.

On the same day, Trump defended the bill, which is currently under review in Congress, arguing it was necessary despite the long-term financial strain it could place on American taxpayers.

The clash signals a growing rift between Musk and the White House. During Trump’s last campaign, Musk was a major donor, contributing nearly $300 million to support his reelection.

In response to Musk's remarks, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt downplayed the impact, stating, “The president already knows where Elon Musk stood on this bill, it doesn’t change his opinion.”

“This is one big, beautiful bill, and he’s sticking to it,” she added.

Despite Musk’s resignation as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), Trump initially maintained that Musk would continue to play a role in the administration. Trump had previously praised Musk’s work, which included cutting tens of thousands of federal jobs, closing multiple agencies, and slashing foreign aid.

Musk, once a close ally of Trump and frequently seen with him on Air Force One, Marine One, at the White House, and at Mar-a-Lago, had aimed to save $2 trillion through DOGE initiatives. According to the department's website, approximately $175 billion (around 8 percent of the goal) has already been saved.
