TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - At least 54,249 Palestinians have died in the Israeli genocide since October 2023 in Gaza, according to the Ministry of Health on Thursday. The verified deaths so far show that almost 70 percent of them are women and children.
A statement from the ministry, as reported by Anadolu, said that 67 bodies were taken to hospitals in the last 24 hours. It was stated that the death toll increased after the names of 98 Palestinians who were killed were added to the list once their data was complete.
The ministry said 184 people were also injured, bringing the total number of casualties to 123,492 in Israel's intense attacks.
"Many victims are still trapped under the rubble and on the roads as rescuers are unable to reach them."
A new list released by the Palestinian Ministry of Health, which includes the names, ages, and genders of the deceased victims until March 22, covers 50,021 people. The fatalities range from newborn babies to 110-year-old citizens. Of this total, 15,613 people, or 31 percent, are under 18.
According to data from the Israeli human rights organization, B'Tselem, the official death toll from the Palestinian Ministry of Health is much higher than the number of casualties from Israeli attacks in Gaza since 2005.
An examination of the previous list of fatalities from the Gaza Ministry of Health showed that more than 1,200 families were wiped out, including one family of 14 members.
This figure does not always reflect all victims, as many are still buried under the rubble, said the Palestinian Ministry of Health. It is estimated that around 10,000 bodies are unaccounted for in this way, with only a few dozen having been found since the ceasefire.
According to a peer-reviewed study published in The Lancet journal in January, the official Palestinian count of direct deaths in the Gaza war is likely less than the actual death toll by around 40 percent.
The UN human rights office also said that the Palestinian Authority's figures might be less than the actual number. In previous Israeli wars in Gaza, the UN count sometimes exceeded the number of Palestinians.
The Israeli army resumed its attack on the Gaza Strip on March 18 and has since killed 3,986 people and injured 11,451 others, breaking the ceasefire and the prisoner exchange agreement that was in effect in January.
Last November, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war in the enclave.
