TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chief Operating Officer of the National Energy Investment Agency (BPI Danantara), Dony Oskaria, has confirmed that an evaluation will be conducted on PT PLN (Persero) following the power outage in Sumatra, Indonesia. The incident, which occurred on Friday, May 22, 2026, has affected the provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, and Jambi.
"We will review the process, including its causes, and most importantly, future anticipatory measures to ensure that this does not happen again," he said when met at Danantara Building on Monday, May 25, 2026.
The power outage has also disrupted various public facilities. The recovery is also taking place gradually for various areas in Sumatra.
PLN's Transmission Director, Edwin Nugraha Putra, stated that the gradual repair is due to the influence of the transmission system's condition and the different types of power plants in the affected areas. Two hours after the blackout, PLN inspected the transmission system through the Extra High Voltage Substation (GITET).
"When the transmission system is normal, we then switch to the generation system," he said at a press conference at the National Police Headquarters, yesterday.
Initially, Diesel Power Plants (PLTD) and Gas Power Plants (PLTG) are the quickest to be reactivated. Areas using these plants will be the first to have their power restored, 3-5 hours after the transmission system returns to normal.
Then PLN will activate Gas and Steam Power Plants (PLTGU). These plants will take 10 to 15 hours to be restored after the transmission system returns to normal.
PLN apologizes for the inconvenience experienced by the public. The repair process is still ongoing.
