Chronology of West Bank Escalation: Israeli Forces Ram Hajj Bus, Arrest Civilians

1 day ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - On Saturday morning, May 31, 2025, Israeli military forces launched an attack in the occupied West Bank. In addition to detaining two civilians, Israel also targeted a bus carrying Palestinian hajj pilgrims in the city of Jenin, located in the northern West Bank.

According to Middle East Monitor, the incident began when an Israeli military vehicle deliberately crashed into a parked hajj bus in front of the Governor's office in Jenin.

The bus was preparing to depart for the Karama border, the main crossing point between the West Bank and Jordan, used by pilgrims traveling to Saudi Arabia for the hajj.

The official Palestinian news agency WAFA reported that the military vehicle “intentionally rammed the bus.” While no injuries were reported, most passengers were elderly and suffered from chronic illnesses, which caused panic and emotional distress.

Mansour al-Saadi, Deputy Governor of Jenin, condemned the incident in strong terms. He stated that the military vehicle had intentionally struck the bus while it was parked outside the Governor's office, emphasizing that the elderly passengers' health conditions heightened the trauma and fear caused by the incident.

Arrests and Raids Across the West Bank

Beyond the events in Jenin, the Israeli military conducted raids in several other parts of the West Bank.

In Silat al-Harithiya, west of Jenin, Israeli forces arrested a Palestinian youth, Samer Jaradat, after searching his home. Eyewitnesses told Anadolu news agency that an explosive device detonated as the troops withdrew from the area.

In northern Tulkarem, a 24-year-old woman named Diana Ghalib Mazid was arrested after her house in the city of Anabta was raided.

Additional attacks occurred in the New Askar Camp east of Nablus and al-Ain Camp to the west of the city. Residents reported hearing gunfire and stun grenades, though no casualties or arrests have been officially confirmed.

Since January 21, 2025, Israeli forces have ramped up operations in the northern West Bank. These actions began in and around Jenin, then expanded to Tulkarem on January 27.

This escalation has coincided with Israel’s broader military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which began on October 7, 2023. According to reports, at least 972 Palestinians have been killed and more than 7,000 injured in the West Bank alone.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health noted that the violence is not only perpetrated by the military but also by Israeli settlers, who have frequently assaulted Palestinian civilians.

In July, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel’s ongoing occupation of Palestinian territories is illegal. The court called for the immediate dismantling of all Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
