TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A car ploughing into fans of the football club Liverpool in England who were celebrating their historic victory in the top league. The celebration quickly turned into a horrifying day as dozens of people were injured in the crash.
Around 50 Liverpool fans were treated in hospitals. Here is the chronology of events leading up to the car crashing into the crowd on Monday afternoon as reported by Sky News.
Car Ploughing into Crowd of Liverpool Fans
A number of people began to gather in the city of Liverpool on Monday afternoon before the winning Liverpool squad departed in an open bus around 2:30 in the afternoon. The bus started its journey at Allerton Maze in the south of the city, covering a route of 10 miles over three and a half hours which would end at Strand.
Around 5:40 pm the open bus team passed Water Street in the city center of Liverpool and the celebration continued into the evening. However, 20 minutes later, a car was seen ploughing into the crowd on Water Street as people tried to move aside.
The vehicle passed Hooters restaurant and then stopped. Victims of the attack were thrown to the ground from the front window, fell to the ground, and ran to avoid being hit.
Separate recordings show a crowd of people surrounding the car and hitting its windows as the police approached the vehicle.
Merseyside Police said around 6:50 that officers were dealing with a traffic accident report in the city center of Liverpool. The police said the vehicle had crashed into a number of pedestrians on Water Street.
The police said the vehicle stopped at the scene. The driver of the car, who is a man, has been detained.
UK PM Describes the Accident as Horrific
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer said around 7:30 pm that he received the latest information about the crash. In a statement shared at X, he said, "The incident in Liverpool is truly horrifying. My thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and continuing response to this shocking incident," said Starmer.
Shortly after 8 pm, the police said a 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area was arrested at the scene on Water Street. "A thorough investigation is underway to determine the circumstances that caused the crash. We ask the public not to share disturbing content online, but to submit recordings or information directly to us @MerPolCC or pass on information by contacting 101 and quoting log 784," he said.
At almost the same time, the Liverpool football club said they were in direct contact with the police regarding the incident on Water Street that occurred near the end of the trophy parade this afternoon. "Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected by this serious incident," he said.
Police State It's Not a Terrorism Case
Deputy Chief of Merseyside Police, Jenny Sims, said that the incident is not being treated as terrorism. "What I can say is that we are confident this is a separate incident. We are not seeking anyone else in connection with this incident," she said.
