Cambodia Turns to Malaysia for Assistance to Secure Release of Soldiers Held in Thailand

1 day ago 12

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Cambodia has requested Malaysia's  assistant to secure the release of about 20 of its soldiers currently held in Thailand's military detention.

The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief has requested Malaysia, which is currently acting as the coordinator and monitor of the ceasefire, to press the Thai Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces to facilitate the release of the soldiers.

The Cambodian government has also sought the assistance of Malaysian Armed Forces Chief General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, who leads the monitoring team, as reported by Malay Mail.

It is also mentioned that the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief, Vong Pisen, has officially requested assistance from Malaysia.

The statement was made by Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet in a social media post on Thursday as reported by Anadolu. "I sincerely hope that the Thai Army will return all our soldiers currently in their custody to Cambodia as soon as possible," said Hun Manet, according to state media.

He also stated that the Cambodian military has been in communication with Thailand to urge the prompt release of the detained personnel.

""The well-being of the country's armed forces, as well as the civilians living in the affected areas, has been the highest priority of his government," Hun Manet said, adding that that's why the Cambodian government has been tirelessly working to achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible.

Separately, Cambodian Ministry of Defense spokesperson General Maly Socheata said Cambodia has so far received the body of one of the 21 soldiers detained by Thailand during the border clashes.

Meanwhile, the other 20 individuals are still held by Thailand, she added.

On Monday, Thailand and Cambodia agreed to an unconditional ceasefire in a meeting in Malaysia. This marks a significant breakthrough in ending the deadly five-day border clashes. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of dozens of people and forced tens of thousands of residents from both countries to flee their homes.

Relations between Thailand and Cambodia have deteriorated in recent weeks as tensions escalated into cross-border air raids and rocket fire last week, causing numerous casualties, including among the military.

The two neighboring countries have been in conflict over territory along their 817-kilometer northern Cambodian border.
