BRICS Declaration on Gaza and Iran-Israel War

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The leaders of the BRICS countries have stressed that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the Palestinian territory, which also includes the West Bank, and should be governed as a unit by the Palestinian Authority.

This was one of the contents of the declaration agreed upon at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 6-7, 2025. Indonesia participated in this summit. BRICS itself is an organization for economic cooperation among developing countries that seek to challenge the economic dominance of developed countries.

"We recognize that the Gaza Strip is an integral part of the occupied Palestinian territory," the declaration stated. "We emphasize, in this regard, the importance of unifying the West Bank and the Gaza Strip under the Palestinian Authority."

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian resistance organization, Hamas, launched ground and air attacks from the Gaza Strip to Israel. According to the Israeli authorities, 1,200 of its citizens were killed in the attack, while 200 others were taken hostage.

Israel then launched a large-scale attack on the Gaza Strip and announced a full blockade policy on the enclave.

Israel's relentless attacks, apart from during brief ceasefires, have resulted in more than 57,000 Palestinian and 1,500 Israeli fatalities.

The war in the Gaza Strip also spilled over to several other areas in the Middle East, including Lebanon and Yemen.

BRICS Statement on Iran-Israel

In their declaration, the BRICS leaders also condemned the military attacks on Iran as violations of international law and the UN Charter. "We condemn the military attacks on the Islamic Republic of Iran since June 13, 2025, which constitute a violation of international law and the UN Charter, and express serious concern over the subsequent escalation of the security situation in the Middle East," the declaration stated.

BRICS also emphasized the importance of protecting nuclear facilities and the safety of civilians. In the declaration, they expressed concern over attacks on "civilian infrastructure and peaceful nuclear facilities under the full supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)."

"In this context, we reiterate our support for diplomatic initiatives to address regional challenges. We also call on the UN Security Council to promptly follow up on this issue," the BRICS leaders said.

The Israel-Iran conflict erupted on June 13 when Israel launched air strikes on military, nuclear, and civilian sites in Iran. The Israeli attacks killed at least 935 people and injured 5,332, according to the Iranian Ministry of Health.

In response, Iran launched missiles and drones, which killed at least 29 people and injured more than 3,400 others, according to data from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

The conflict ended after a ceasefire was mediated by the United States and went into effect on June 24.
