BREAKING NEWS: Jakarta Police Rule Out Foul Play in Diplomat Arya Daru's Death

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Metropolitan Police have ruled out foul play in the death of young Foreign Ministry diplomat Arya Daru Pangayunan, concluding that he died from a lack of oxygen with no signs of third-party involvement.

The announcement was made by Commissioner Wira Satya Triputra, Director of the General Crime Investigation Division, in a press conference on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

Chief of Metro Jaya Police's General Crime Investigation Division, Commissioner Wira Satya Triputra, stated that Arya's death was not the result of foul play. “We conclude that no criminal activity was involved,” Wira said in a press conference on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

According to Wira, the victim died without any third-party involvement. One piece of evidence supporting this conclusion was the presence of the victim’s fingerprints on the yellow duct tape wrapped around his face.

Wira explained that the duct tape had been purchased by Arya and his wife in Yogyakarta. Forensic results showed that Arya had wrapped the tape around his own face. “No foreign DNA was found, only the victim’s, including on the tape and bed sheet,” he said.

Police also ruled out the presence of any other individual in the room where Arya was found dead. There were no signs of forced entry, damaged ceilings, or tampered door locks — all three door locks were found intact and unlocked.

The conclusion was reached after a thorough investigation, including an autopsy, digital footprint analysis, and interviews with dozens of witnesses. “We conducted a scientific crime investigation,” Wira said.

He added that a total of 24 witnesses had been questioned, though two others failed to appear. “We had initially summoned 26 witnesses,” he said.

Nathanael E. J. Sumampouw, Chairman of the Indonesian Association of Forensic Psychology (Apsifor), said Arya had a tendency to suppress emotional distress. “The deceased struggled to express negative emotions,” Nathanael noted.

Arya Daru was found dead on the morning of July 8 in room 105 of the Guest House Gondangdia, located on Jalan Gondangdia Kecil, Menteng, Central Jakarta.

His body was discovered by the boarding house keeper after Arya’s wife, who lives in Yogyakarta, asked them to check on him due to his unresponsiveness. The room was locked from the inside, and Arya was the sole holder of the key.

When the door was finally opened, Arya's body was stiff with his entire face covered with yellow tape.

“The victim was lying on the bed with his head covered in duct tape and his body wrapped in a blanket,” said Central Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner Susatyo Purnomo Condro on Tuesday, July 8, 2025.
