Australia Targets Big Tech with Algorithm Opt-Out Bill

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The Australian government announced planned new rules for social media platforms on Tuesday that would give users greater control over their social media algorithms.

Under the "My Feed, My Way" initiative, social media platforms would have to allow users to opt out of content recommended by an algorithm in their feeds.

What is in Australia's social media algorithm bill?

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese unveiled draft legislation that would impose a "duty of care" on major social media platforms, including Facebook, TikTok, and Instagram

Users would only see content from accounts they choose to follow.

"It's not about giving government control. It's about giving people control," Albanese said.

The bill is expected to be approved by the Australian Parliament and introduced later this year.

Companies that do not comply could be fined up to AU$100 million ($72 million, €62 million).

Social media bans for children

Anika Wells, Australia's Minister for Communications, said the measure would help ensure children's safety on social media. Australia became the first country to restrict social media access for under-16s in 2025.

Several countries, including Germany, Spain, France, Denmark, and New Zealand, followed Australia's lead and drafted plans to introduce similar age restrictions.

Some big tech companies have opposed such new regulations. They argue it could encourage young users to move to unregulated online spaces.
