4 New Features of KAI Commuter's New EMU Trains from China

2 days ago 7

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) Commuter began operating three new electric multiple units (EMUs) on Sunday, June 1, 2025. Two of the three trains were imported from China and will serve the Bogor Line and Cikarang Line.

KAI President Director Asdo Artriviyanto stated that the Bogor Line is the main focus due to its high passenger volume. According to KAI Commuter data, from January to April 2025, a total of 48.6 million passengers used this route. The Cikarang Line ranks second, with 26.8 million passengers.

“We will also prepare new fleets for other lines,” said Asdo during a trial run of the new train with members of the media heading to Bogor Station on Sunday morning, June 1, 2025.

Can Carry up to 3,400 Passengers

Asdo explained that each carriage of the new train can carry up to 289 passengers. A full train set consists of 12 carriages. “It can carry 3,400 passengers in one trip. Hopefully, this can reduce overcrowding, especially during peak hours,” he said.

He added that the new trains were put into operation after undergoing a series of dynamic tests and receiving safety and operational certification, in accordance with the Ministry of Transportation Regulation Number PM 49 of 2023 issued by the Directorate General of Railways (DJKA).

Equipped with Digital Route Information Displays

In addition to increased capacity, the imported trains from China are also equipped with digital route information boards installed above the doors. These allow passengers to see the current train location and the next station in real time.

On this latest model, journey information is displayed on a digital screen above each door. This is different from the older EMUs, which were former Japanese trains, where route announcements were made by staff using loudspeakers. “Previously it was manual, now it’s digital,” said Asdo.

Indicator Lights Above Train Doors

The new trains also feature yellow indicator lights installed above the doors. These lights flash and emit a sound when the doors are about to open or close.

According to Asdo, the yellow light serves as a warning for passengers to be cautious when boarding or alighting. “If the door cannot open, the light turns red, indicating a malfunction or issue,” he said.

Priority Seats Located Next to Every Door

The new Bogor Line train, with the series number CLI-125, consists of 12 carriages, more than the previous version which had only 10. On both sides of every door, there are grey seats. The ends of these bench seats are marked in red to indicate priority seating.

Asdo explained that these seats are intended for passengers with special needs, such as pregnant women, the elderly, people with disabilities, and those carrying infants or small children. “Why not use designated special compartments like in the older sets? We want to make it easier for priority passengers to find their seats,” said Asdo.
