2026 World Cup Qualifiers: No Additional Players for Indonesia Ahead China Match

1 day ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The manager of the Indonesian national team, Sumardji, assured that coach Patrick Kluivert has no plans to add players to the current roster set to face China and Japan in the third round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for Group C.

The team currently comprises 30 players, but only 29 are present in Jakarta, as Maarten Paes is absent prior to his scheduled arrival today, Monday, June 2, 2025.

This number is two players short of the total 32 players called up by Patrick Kluivert. They are Eliano Reijnders, who is focusing on the birth of his second child, while Sandy Walsh is recovering from injury.

"We will communicate further with Coach Patrick about whether someone will be sent back, but it was informed that the players will remain at 30. We'll have to wait for confirmation later," said Sumardji, who is also the head of the National Team Body (BTN) in Jakarta, on Sunday.

The Garuda squad arrived in Jakarta on Sunday evening and had their first training session on Monday afternoon after spending a week in training camp in Bali, where 28 players participated.

Meanwhile, another player, Kevin Diks, did not participate in the Bali camp and directly joined in the training camp in Jakarta.

Sumardji then explained that the players are all in good and injury-free condition. They are now ready for their first home match this month, facing off against China at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium, Jakarta, on Thursday, June 5, at 8:45 p.m. local time.

After facing China, Jay Idzes and his teammates will fly to Japan to face the home team at Suita Stadium on Tuesday, June 10.

"Alhamdulillah, all players are in good shape, without any complaints of pain or anything else. The training camp in Bali was quite intense, and we see that the players gladly went through all of it," said the 53-year-old man.

"Which indicates that these friends, these players, are truly ready to face the match on June 5."

Currently, the Indonesian national team is in fourth place in the temporary standings with nine points. They lead by three points from Bahrain and China, who are in fifth and sixth positions.

In fourth place, Indonesia is one point behind Saudi Arabia in third place, four points behind Australia in second place, and 11 points behind Japan in first place.
