TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Corrections of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights sent 100 high-risk drug convicts to the Super Maximum Security Penitentiary on Nusakambangan Island, Cilacap, Central Java, Indonesia.
The 100 inmates from several prisons in North Sumatra, with their hands handcuffed and feet tied, were transferred to Nusakambangan on Saturday, June 14, 2025. They were escorted by 200 personnel from the Directorate of Intelligence Security and the Directorate of Internal Compliance, employees of the regional office of the Directorate General of Corrections and prisons in North Sumatra in cooperation with the Mobile Brigade Unit of North Sumatra.
The Sub-Directorate of Cooperation and Public Service of the Directorate General of Corrections, Rika Aprianti, said that the transfer of the 100 high-risk inmates was in accordance with the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), which includes investigation, inquiry, and assessment.
"The transfer of 100 high-risk drug convicts in the North Sumatra region to the Super Maximum Security Penitentiary on Nusakambangan Island is part of the Ministry's serious efforts to eradicate and create a zero-drug environment in the penitentiaries and detention centers," Rika said in a written statement received by Tempo on Sunday, June 15, 2025.
According to Rika, about 1,000 inmates have been transferred to the Super Maximum and Maximum Security Penitentiaries during the leadership of Minister of Law and Human Rights, Agus Andrianto.
"The target we aim to achieve is to reduce drug distribution within the penitentiaries and detention centers to zero, which also has an impact on society," Rika added.
Rika expressed hope that the transfer of the convicts will also lead to a positive change in their behavior after the appropriate security and guidance are applied in Nusakambangan Penitentiary.
