10 Countries with the World's Lowest Electricity Rates

1 day ago 6

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The news of the cancellation of a 50 percent discount on electricity tariffs for June-July 2025 has attracted public attention. The Indonesian government has decided to replace the discount with additional wage subsidy assistance (BSU) for workers with a maximum salary of Rp3.5 million per month or equivalent to the provincial/district/city minimum wage (UMP/UMK), as well as honorary teachers, from the previous Rp150,000 per month to Rp300,000 per month.

"We have held meetings among the ministers. As for implementing the electricity discount, the budgeting process is much slower than expected. Therefore, if the goal is to implement it in June and July, it cannot be done," said Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati in a press conference after a limited meeting related to economic stimulus at the Presidential Palace, Jakarta, Monday, June 2, 2025.

So, where are the countries with the cheapest electricity tariffs worldwide?

The highest household electricity tariff is in Europe, which is $0.23 per kWh, while the lowest is in Asia at $0.08 per kWh. Meanwhile, Africa is $0.12 per kWh, Oceania is $0.22 per kWh, North America is $0.14 per kWh, and South America is $0.19 per kWh.

In the first quarter of 2025, electricity prices rose by more than 15 percent in Australia, Luxembourg, Malawi, Moldova, Oman, and France. Meanwhile, significant tariff reductions occurred in Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Cape Verde, and Zambia.

"These confirm the pattern that large price changes result from regulatory decisions and not from commodity price changes. The power component is less than half of the final bill, the rest being the cost of transmission and distribution and taxes, both of which are regulated," wrote GlobalPetrolPrices.com.
