TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Malaysian U-23 national team player, Danish Syamer, said, "This is not our fortune," after his team failed to advance to the semifinals of the AFF U-23 2025. They were eliminated after only drawing 0-0 against Indonesia's U-23 national team in the last match of Group A at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), Jakarta, on Monday, July 21.
"Yes, it is indeed sad, because if we had participated in this tournament, Malaysia seemed to be one of the teams to advance to the next round. But perhaps it is not our fortune," said Syamer in SUGBK's mixed zone.
The draw against Indonesia resulted in Malaysia collecting four points, with one win, one draw, and one loss. From the three group champions and the best runner-up who would advance to the semifinals, these four points were only enough to place them in third position.
This is a failure in itself for Harimau Malaya, who in the previous edition in Thailand (2023), managed to advance to the semifinals before being stopped by Vietnam, who eventually became the champion.
Nevertheless, Syamer interpreted this failure maturely. "We will take the positive side, and the negative side will be learned from, learn from mistakes. This is a very good match for us. The opponent is good. Many things will be improved so that our team can reach the next level."
Prior to this, the Negeri Sembilan player said that he would give 120 percent effort to win against Indonesia, when his team had just defeated Brunei Darussalam 7-1 in the second match, last Friday.
When asked about his response to the fact that victory was not on their side, he said, "For us, we have done our best. Yes, it is true, as I said yesterday, we put all our energy into today, but luck was not on our side."
