TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded 71 tectonic earthquakes in West Java throughout July 2025. "With six earthquakes felt by the residents," said the Head of BMKG Geophysical Station Class I Bandung, Teguh Rahayu, today, Friday, August 1, 2025.
Referring to BMKG Bandung's records, shallow earthquakes with a depth of less than 60 kilometers still dominated, occurring 59 times. There were also moderate earthquakes with a hypocenter of 60-300 kilometers, occurring 12 times.
The earthquake's strength in West Java during the last month, according to Rahayu, ranged from magnitude 1.4 to 5.3. "Offshore tremors occurred 52 times, while inland earthquakes 19 times," he said.
The most powerful quake, with a magnitude of 5.3, struck on July 23, 2025, at 03:04 a.m. local time. Despite being located far from the Indonesian ocean, 240 kilometers southwest of Bayah, Banten, the tremor reached Ciracap, Sukabumi, and Surade with a II-III MMI intensity. The quake from a depth of 10 kilometers made hanging objects sway, and the vibrations were akin to trucks passing by.
Compared to 92 earthquakes in the previous month, the number of quakes in West Java decreased in July 2025.
Seismic Trend in West Java Increasing
The Head of BMKG Geophysical Station Sukabumi, Agung Sabtaji, said West Java is seeing an upward trend in tectonic events, with the average number of earthquakes reaching 510 times per year.
"It has been growing from year to year," he said in an online discussion on Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Day on Wednesday, July 30, 2025.
Agung explained the earthquake trend in West Java since 2012. The region started out with a small number of seismographs installed by BMKG. Out of 36 devices now installed in West Java, 21 were just installed in 2019.
The West Java government also installed three seismographs in 2024 in the Tambun area of Bekasi Regency, Tanjungsari in Bogor Regency, and Selaawi in Garut Regency.
According to BMKG's seismograph data, there were 554 earthquakes recorded throughout 2019, then 229 in 2020, followed by 556 in 2021, 1,198 in 2022, 1,054 in 2023, and 1,187 in 2024. In 2025, thus far, BMKG has recorded 566 earthquakes in West Java.
