TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The United States has begun detaining foreign nationals whose visas have expired at airports during domestic flights, including spouses of U.S. citizens and immigrants with valid work permits, according to a report by The New York Times, citing ANTARA.
According to U.S. Department of Homeland Security documents and interviews with immigration lawyers in the report, more than two dozen people detained from various countries fall into a "gray zone" of U.S. law.
Those detained by U.S. authorities had actually applied for visa extensions or obtained green cards, and were officially permitted to work in the U.S.
Previously, migrants awaiting immigration administrative processing and who had not committed a crime were rarely detained at U.S. airports.
According to the newspaper, the detentions resulted from an expanded partnership between the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
As part of this partnership, airlines automatically match passenger information with U.S. immigration databases.
