U.S. Sanctions Palestine Groups PA and PLO for 'Supporting Terrorism' and 'Undermining Peace'

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trump's administration has announced sanctions against members of the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO). The U.S. accuses them of supporting terrorism and attempting to disrupt peace efforts.

The announcement was made on Thursday, July 31, 2025, by the Department of State. Trump has refused visas for members of both organizations. “It is in our national security interests to impose consequences and hold the PLO and PA accountable for not complying with their commitments and undermining the prospects for peace,” the announcement read, as quoted by Al Jazeera.

Both the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization act as representatives of the Palestinian people. They push for the recognition of the State of Palestine on the international stage.

However, the U.S. Department of State stated that they have reported to Congress that these groups have violated international agreements, including the 2002 Middle East Peace Commitments Act. The U.S. also condemned the PA and the PLO for seeking to "internationalize" the conflict with Israel by seeking resolutions in the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

The U.S. also accuses the Palestinian Authority and the Palestine Liberation Organization of continuing to support terrorism, including incitement and glorification of violence. These organizations are alleged to have provided benefits to support terrorism to "Palestinian terrorists" and their families.

The U.S. Department of State cited textbooks as a means that these groups have allegedly used to support terrorism.

Trump's administration announcement comes as several Western countries declared their support for Palestine. France, the UK, and Canada have pledged to recognize the statehood of Palestine in the UN General Assembly in September.

However, Trump regards these efforts as irrelevant. He also warned that recognizing the State of Palestine would be a gift to Hamas.

In recent months, the U.S. has imposed a series of sanctions aimed at weakening individuals and entities critical of Israel. For example, in June, the U.S. imposed sanctions on judges in the International Criminal Court involved in the decision to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Earlier this month, the U.S. also imposed sanctions on the UN Special Rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, who is tasked with monitoring the human rights situation of Palestinian people. At that time, the U.S. accused Albanese of waging a political and economic war against the United States and Israel.
