TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The President of the United States, Donald Trump, believes that Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu is prolonging the war in Gaza for personal political gain. This allegation was conveyed by two Trump administration officials to The Atlantic, as quoted by Times of Israel on Thursday, July 31, 2025.
According to the report, Trump is increasingly eager to end the war soon, following the wave of condemnation against Israel's actions in Gaza. Trump and his aides believe that Israel's military objectives in Gaza have long been achieved and Netanyahu only continues the war to maintain his own political power.
Netanyahu is Seen as Holding off Ceasefire
According to the same report, the White House also sees that Netanyahu has taken steps that hinder the achievement of a ceasefire deal. However, the two officials mentioned that Trump is unlikely to openly blame Netanyahu or change the United States' policy towards Israel.
Trump also responded to various decisions of other countries that support the statehood of Palestine. In his post on Truth Social, he wrote, “The fastest way to end the Humanitarian Crises in Gaza is for Hamas to SURRENDER AND RELEASE THE HOSTAGES!!!”
When asked about the decision of the United Kingdom to recognize the state of Palestine, Trump responded that Hamas should not be rewarded with that recognition. He also reacted similarly to Canada's plan to support the statehood of Palestine. "Wow! Canada has just announced that it is backing statehood for Palestine. That will make it very hard for us to make a Trade Deal with them. Oh, Canada!!!" wrote Trump.
GHF Operation Under Scrutiny
Senior advisor of Trump, Steven Witkoff, was scheduled to visit Gaza. He was inspecting the distribution center of the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a humanitarian organization supported by the United States and Israel.
The GHF operation came under scrutiny after reports emerged of deadly shootings by the Israeli army around the aid distribution site. The Gaza Health Ministry claimed that more than 1,000 people were killed near the GHF site due to Israeli fire, a claim that Israel dismissed as exaggeration.
