TEMPO.CO, JakartaTropical Cyclone Senyar is predicted to have re-entered the waters of the Malacca Strait east of Aceh today, on Thursday, November 27, 2025. The cyclone made landfall on Sumatra, precisely in Langsa, Aceh, on Wednesday morning, making it a very rare event.

Information from the Indonesian Agency for Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) states that Senyar, which previously grew from cyclone seed 95B, is expected to weaken into a tropical depression. The prediction is that the maximum wind speed, which was observed at 65 km/h on Wednesday night, will decrease to 55 km/h by tonight.

Separately, a climate and atmosphere researcher at BRIN, Erma Yulihastin, revealed that Senyar is still classified as a weak tropical cyclone 0. She also said the same about its movement back towards the Malacca Strait today. This climatology professor shows the cyclone's track moving away from Sumatra, crossing the Medan area, North Sumatra.

"Although its cyclonic movement is starting to disintegrate, its circulation is potentially re-forming and heading towards the Malacca Strait tomorrow," Erma wrote on social media platform X on Wednesday night, quoting permitted.

Erma also stated that Senyar is now listed as the second-lowest latitude tropical cyclone, after Typhoon Vamei in 2001. Senyar landed in Aceh over two decades ago, while Vamei formed in the South China Sea and reached northern Singapore.

Erma mentioned that a tropical storm forming so close to the equator was once calculated to recur only every 100-400 years, but it only recurs every 20-40 years. Senyar, Erma added, will still have an impact on the Aceh region tomorrow.
