Thailand's Maya Bay to Temporarily Close Starting August 1

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Maya Bay at Phi Phi Leh Island, Krabi, Thailand will be temporarily closed from August 1 to September 30, 2025. This two-month closure is intended to allow nature to breathe and recover after facing peak summer holiday traffic.

The area gained worldwide fame after appearing in the film starring Leonardo DiCaprio, The Beach. It is known for its towering limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and stunning coral reefs. In addition to Maya Bay, the closure will also be implemented in the nearby Loh Sama Bay.

The temporary closure, announced by the Department of National Parks, is part of a continuous effort to restore the fragile marine ecosystem at Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park. Millions of footsteps, boat anchors, and selfie sticks leave traces every season. Therefore, the closure of this area is crucial for sustainability.

"The seasonal closure has become a vital part of ongoing efforts to balance tourism with environmental protection," said an official from the department. "The annual conservation program is designed to allow coral reefs, shorelines, and underwater habitats to recover from the pressures of tourism."

Ecological Restoration Projects

During this two-month break, the park will carry out various ecological restoration projects. These projects include monitoring the health of marine resources, restoring damaged coral reefs, installing mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage, strengthening wave barriers to control coastal erosion, and enhancing awareness of sustainable tourism for visitors and local businesses.

Although Maya Bay and Loh Sama Bay will be closed, tourists can still visit many other places in the area. Phi Phi Don Island, Ton Sai Bay, Monkey Beach, and several certified diving locations will remain open. However, travelers must adhere to the park's strict regulations to protect the environment, according to The Pattaya News.

Park authorities urge tourists and tour operators to respect the closure and explore alternative tourist attractions.

Periodic Closure Since 2018

This is not the first time Maya Bay has been closed. The site has become an example of the impact of mass tourism on Thailand's natural beauty. This has led to the need for periodic closures since 2018.

Long-term threats from climate change and excessive tourism led to the seasonal closure of the park, aiming to set an example of responsible travel, where enjoying nature does not have to come at the cost of environmental damage. This closure is expected to help preserve the lush green-blue waters and fine white sand of Maya Bay for future generations.
