Texas Flash Flood Death Toll Climbs to Over 82 as Dozens Remain Missing

6 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The death toll from the flash floods in Texas, United States, climbed to at least 82 on Sunday, after rescuers found more bodies in the hardest-hit area of Kerr County and additional deaths were reported in other counties. The victims include children who were camping along the Guadalupe River, as reported by France24 and NBC News.

Rescue teams in Texas are racing against time to find dozens of missing people, including children, swept away by flash floods. Local weather forecasters warned of subsequent floods.

Local Texans joined disaster response teams in the field and helicopters to search for the missing, including 10 girls and a counselor from a Christian summer camp along the river where about 750 people were staying when the disaster struck.

The overflowing Guadalupe River, swollen by rain, reached the treetops and cabin roofs at Camp Mystic as girls slept on Friday, washing some of them away and leaving a scene of devastation.

Blankets, teddy bears, and other items were seen buried in mud. Cabin windows were shattered, seemingly from the force of the water.

Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick said heavy rain likely to cause more floods began falling on Sunday, while the death toll at the camp and elsewhere in Kerr County rose to at least 59.

"We expect that to go higher, sadly," Patrick told Fox News Sunday.

He recounted tales of heroism, like a camp counselor who broke a window so the girls in pajamas could swim out and wade through neck-high water.

"These little girls, they swam for about 10 or 15 minutes. Can you imagine, in the darkness and the rushing waters and trees coming by you and rocks come on you? And then they get to a spot on the land," Patrick said.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Camp Mystic had been "horrendously ravaged in ways unlike I've seen in any natural disaster."

"We won't stop until we find every girl who was in those cabins," he said in a post on the X social media platform after visiting the site.

U.S. officials and media reported nine others died elsewhere in Texas, bringing the total to 68.

Officials earlier said 27 girls were missing from the camp. Kerrville city manager Dalton Rice said at a Sunday morning press conference that the number has now reduced to 11. He did not elaborate on the sharp drop in the figures.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned on Sunday that slow-moving thunderstorms threatened more flash floods on waterlogged ground in central Texas.

The floods began over the Fourth of July holiday, when months' worth of rain fell in hours, mostly overnight while people slept.

The Guadalupe River rose about eight meters—higher than a two-story building—in just 45 minutes.

Swept Away

President Donald Trump, at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, signed a major disaster declaration that frees up resources for the state.

Flash floods, which occur when the ground cannot absorb heavy rain, are not uncommon. The southern and central Texas area where the flash floods occurred over the weekend is known as "Flash Flood Alley."

However, scientists say that in recent years, human-induced climate change has made extreme weather events like floods, droughts, and heatwaves more frequent and intense.

People from various places in Texas gathered in Kerr County to help search for the missing victims.

Texans also began flying private drones to assist in the search, but Rice urged them to stop, saying it was hazardous to rescue aircraft.
