TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – A journalist for Tempo, Francisca Christy Rosana, affectionately known as Cica, received the 2025 Udin Award from the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI). The award was presented during AJI's 31st-anniversary celebration at the Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) Building in Central Jakarta.
In her acceptance speech, delivered via teleconference on Friday, August 8, 2025, Cica notably thanked Presidential Communications Chief Hasan Nasbi, who had previously suggested that she cook a pig’s head that had been sent to Tempo's office as a form of intimidation.
"Thanks to Hasan Nasbi, the terror attacks against journalists in Indonesia have received greater international exposure," Cica stated.
Pig's Head Incident
Two days after the pig's head threat, Hasan Nasbi publicly suggested Cica should cook it. He reasoned that Cica had responded to the threat with a joke on social media.
"I saw Cica on social media. She asked for pork. That means she's not threatened. She can joke. Send pork, please," Hasan said on March 21, 2025.
According to Nasbi, the incident was a private matter between Tempo and another party, and the government did not want to be associated with it. "We don't know about this. It's their problem with whoever it is. I don't know who sent it. I can't comment on anything," he added.
Hasan also questioned the seriousness of the threat, asking if it was a real threat or just a joke, since Tempo's editorial team had responded with humor. "Is it true or just a joke? Because they responded with a joke," he said.
He also urged that the terror case not be exaggerated, emphasizing that the Prabowo Subianto administration guarantees press freedom. "The government doesn't interfere at all in news production. The government only corrects if the media misunderstands. We correct it. If the media writes an incorrect statement, we correct it," he explained.
A Bittersweet Victory
Cica expressed her mixed emotions about receiving the award. "Receiving the Udin Award is both moving and sad. The continued existence of the Udin Award signifies that press freedom in Indonesia is not yet fully independent and is still far from what is hoped for," she said.
In their deliberation, the jury commented on how the terror Cica experienced, which included threats of pig heads, dead rats, and digital attacks, left a lasting impression, especially amid a growing atmosphere of militarism that threatens press freedom.
"It's not just about resilience against a massive wave of terror, but also about their unwavering commitment to journalism," said Herlambang Wiratraman, one of the judges, at the RRI building on Friday, August 8, 2025.
