TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A study by the Pew Research Center, an independent research institution in the United States, revealed that news influencers are more likely to post content on Social Media X than Bluesky. Referring to a survey of several influencers, the rapidly growing microblogging service Bluesky still cannot surpass the popularity of X.
The Pew Research Center's study describes news influencers are individuals who regularly post about current events and issues on social media. "News influencers can be journalists who are or were affiliated with a news organization or independent content creators, but they must be people and not organizations," quoted from the research published on May 29, 2025.
In the study titled Bluesky has caught on with many news influencers, but X remains popular, the authors analyzed more than 500 news influencer respondents, consisting of 164 Bluesky account owners and 346 X account owners. The study began in 2024 and was further explored in February and March 2025.
The majority of respondents have both X and Bluesky accounts. About 37 percent of influencers have X and Bluesky accounts, 46 percent only have X accounts, and 6 percent only have Bluesky accounts. Data on uploads were collected from 134 news influencers on Bluesky and 321 on X who were active during the study period. They were considered active if they uploaded content for at least 8 weeks out of the 12-week research period.
The Pew Research Center study observed the political tendencies during the 2024 United States presidential and vice-presidential elections. X and Bluesky account owners are indicated to take democratic or liberal political positions, according to their respective references. From the user's perspective, X is still more popular than Bluesky.
"News influencers on X tend to be much more active than those on Bluesky," the study stated.
From the collected data, 54 percent of uploads came from news influencers who uploaded on Bluesky in the first week of January 2025. The number increased to 66 percent by the end of March. In January 2025, 92 percent of uploads on X were from influencers. This figure dropped to 87 percent by the end of March.
In the first three months of 2025, 83 percent of news influencers on X uploaded content an average of four days per week. For Bluesky, only 31 percent of news influencers uploaded almost daily in early January.
