TEMPO.CO, Batam - Silica sand mining continues to operate in Natuna Regency, Riau Islands, exporting up to 1 million tons of silica sand to China.
The head of the Energy and Mineral Resources Department of the Riau Islands Province, Muhammad Darwin, claims that mining sites in Natuna have all completed the necessary permits, including mining production operation permits and export licenses from the Ministry of Trade.
According to Darwin, the quartz sand is only exported to China. "I don't remember the exact amount, approximately one million tons per year," he said to Tempo recently.
Weather affects exports and mining activities
The silica sand mining activity on Natuna Island is significantly affected by weather conditions. Companies can only work for eight months a year.
During the northern monsoon, ships cannot operate for export activities. "During the northern monsoon, the mining operation stops," he said.
Based on data provided by Darwin, there are at least four active quartz sand mining permits in Natuna Regency. Meanwhile, the other 46 quartz mining permits in Natuna Regency are still in the exploration status.
