Rio Declaration: BRICS Calls for Global Reforms for a Fairer World

6 hours ago 2

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The leaders of the BRICS member countries officially adopted the Rio Declaration at the 17th BRICS Summit held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Sunday.

Under Brazil's leadership, the declaration contains the collective commitment of BRICS to strengthen multilateralism and reform global governance in order to create a world order that is fairer, more inclusive, and more democratic.

In the dozens of pages of the document, BRICS calls for a renewal of the international system which is considered incapable of reflecting the geopolitical realities of the 21st century.

"We reaffirm our commitment to reform and improve global governance by promoting an international and multilateral system that is fairer, more equal, more effective, more representative, and more democratic," as stated in the official statement quoted by Antara.

The declaration also highlights the importance of the role of the United Nations (UN), while urging comprehensive reform of the institution, particularly the Security Council, to be able to address global challenges fairly and inclusively.

BRICS also encourages the increased representation of developing countries, including those from Africa, Asia, and Latin America, to play a bigger role in global affairs.

An important moment in this summit was the official welcome of Indonesia as a full member of BRICS. Additionally, BRICS also recognizes several countries as partners, including Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Nigeria, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.

In addition to geopolitical aspects, the declaration also covers cooperation in various strategic fields.

BRICS adopted three main initiatives, namely the BRICS Climate Finance Framework Declaration, the Global Governance of Artificial Intelligence Declaration, and the launch of the BRICS Partnership to Combat Socially Determined Diseases.

"These initiatives reflect our joint efforts to promote inclusive and sustainable solutions to various urgent global issues," the leaders wrote in the document.
