Prada has launched its latest collection of leather sandals inspired by Indian culture. The design adopts the traditional Kolhapuri sandal style, as quoted by Antara on Saturday, July 19, 2025. Prada stated that this collection is a tribute to traditional Indian designs. Loreno Bertelli, Head of Prada's Social Department, said he recognized that these sandals are inspired by traditional handmade Indian footwear with a heritage that has lasted for centuries. This collection is released as part of Prada's latest leather product line.
What Are Kolhapuri Sandals?
According to Indian Mirror, Kolhapuri sandals are traditional footwear originating from Kolhapur, a city in the state of Maharashtra, India. These sandals are entirely made of leather, without the addition of nails, metal, or synthetic adhesives. The manufacturing technique involves vegetable tanning, a method of preserving and hardening the leather using natural tannins from plants.
Kolhapur has been known as a center for traditional leather craftsmanship in India since the 13th century. In the early days of production, these sandals were originally known as kapashi or paytaan before becoming popularly known as Kolhapuri due to their thinner design.
Kolhapuri sandals gained wider popularity in the 18th century when they were sent to Mumbai and began to be marketed on a larger scale. Some traditional design variations, such as kachkadi, bakkalnali, and pukari, have distinct characteristics in the shape of the soles and binding straps. Kolhapuri sandals represent a classic style symbolizing India's cultural heritage.
Manufacturing of Kolhapuri Sandals
The making of Kolhapuri sandals begins with the selection of quality leather. After sorting, the leather undergoes vegetable tanning to soften its texture. This process makes the leather stronger, durable, and comfortable to wear.
Once tanning is complete, the leather is cut according to traditional patterns. Each piece is assembled without the use of nails or other metal. The flexible sole of the sandal provides everyday comfort. It's open-front design and wide binding straps help keep feet stable. This design was initially created to withstand extreme heat in the western regions of India.
Over time, there are various styles of Kolhapuri sandals available. Some modern versions are adorned with ornaments, such as pom-poms or embroidery, or gold strap details, to suit celebratory occasions.
