TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto received the United States Ambassador to ASEAN, Kevin Kim, at his private residence in Hambalang, Bogor Regency, West Java, on Saturday. In the meeting, the two discussed cooperation between the two countries and the region.
Given that the U.S. government has not yet appointed a permanent ambassador to Indonesia, the U.S. Ambassador to ASEAN is the most senior U.S. government official representing his country in Jakarta.
In the same meeting, the president also received the U.S. Charge d'Affaires ad Interim for ASEAN, Joy M. Sakurai.
Cabinet Secretary Teddy Indra Wijaya, who attended the meeting along with Foreign Minister Sugiono and State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi, described the atmosphere as warm and constructive.
"The meeting also discussed various efforts to enhance cooperation between the two countries, including promoting cooperation and stability in the region and strengthening relations between the two countries based on the principles of mutual respect and equal partnership," Teddy told reporters when contacted in Jakarta on Saturday, as quoted by ANTARA.
The cabinet secretary continued, saying that the meeting was expected to strengthen the foundation of relations between Indonesia and the U.S., while also encouraging constructive bilateral cooperation between the two countries and the region.
"This meeting is expected to further strengthen the foundation of Indonesia-United States relations, while also encouraging closer, more constructive, and mutually beneficial cooperation, both bilaterally and in supporting peace, stability, and progress in the region," he said.
As part of his overseas trip in September 2026, Prabowo is scheduled to depart for the United Nations Headquarters in New York, United States, in the fourth week of September to attend the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). However, neither the Palace nor the Cabinet Secretariat has confirmed the president's attendance at the annual UN event thus far.
In 2025, Prabowo made history by delivering his third speech at the 81st UNGA. In front of the leaders of countries and world institutions, Prabowo spoke after Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in first place and U.S. President Donald Trump as the host in second place.
